Analysis/discussion - Pedestrians • Increased number of crashes from 2015 to 2019. • Largest number of crashes involving peds in May. • Night time is most dangerous for pedestrians. – Increased risk of crashes for pedestrians after dark – Greater risk of more serious injuries to pedestrians in crashes after dark • Parking lots and crosswalks are locations with most crashes involving pedestrians. • Seniors are pedestrians at most risk. – Median age of pedestrians hit in Parking Lots = 69. 4 years – Median age of pedestrians hit in all crashes = 57. 5 years • Pedestrian crashes on every day of the week --almost equally distributed by day.
Analysis/discussion – Bicyclists • No Bike crashes reported in 2018 and 2019, and only one bike crash in 2017. • No Bike crashes reported for months of Nov. , Dec. , Jan. , Mar. , April from 2006 -2019. • Except for 1 crash in February, all crashes involving bicyclists from May to October. • Increased number of Bike crashes in October. • Most dangerous day for Bike crashes is Friday. • Most common Bike crash time is around 5 pm, possibly on commute home • 15 out of 17 bicyclists involved in crashes were male. – The gender of one bicyclist was not shown in the data.
Possible interventions – for discussion • Reduced Motor Vehicle speed limits within the City • Communicate risks and ways to prevent crashes • Pedestrian education – Mention increased risk of being involved in crash after dark – Mention higher risk of injuries for crashes after dark – Special materials for children and seniors • • • Bicyclist education Driver education Increased signage (for pedestrians and MVs) Add marked crosswalks (e. g. K-Mart Plaza, Plainfield Rd) Road Safety Surveys/Assessments (e. g. Plainfield Rd, K-Mart Plaza, Colburn Park area)
