Emigration -Between 1870 and 1900, more than 10 millions people left europe for the United States alone. -Many people fled from countries with poor economic conditions such as Ireland Italy. -Other people such as jews, armenians, and slaves, fled oppression and discrimination.
The shift to cities -The factory system became the greatest spur to city growth -Many factories were located in already established cities, which then grew tremendously. -about 10 percent of population lived in cities in 1800. By 1921 that figure had grown to 80 percent
Sanitation and Public order -Until very late in the century, cities did not have sewers, garbage collections, and no running water in their homes. -After the 1870 s cities began to have flushing toilets, water system, a sewers system and paved roads. -In 1829 sir robert peel organized a permanent police for the city of london. Nickname “Bobbies” after peel's first name
The Development of Suburbs -suburb: residential areas on the outskirts of cites. -The first people to move to the suburbs were employers, managers, merchants, and professionals because of the high cost of transportation. -factory workers had to live in walking distance from there jobs. In time however, lower fares made it possible for more people to ride trolleys and other forms of public transportation to work
Improvement in diet and food storage -Science and technology combined to produce better methods of preserving and transporting food. Growth of Public Education -To many the ideas of the american and french revolutions about liberty, equality and representative government made it important to provide education for all citizens. -There was some resistance to the idea from people who believed the cost of education would result in an increase of taxes -in European nations, the central government established and control the school. In the United States local government established and control schools
Education for Women In the late 1800 s women were allowed to go to elementary school In france and britain high school for girls was focused on foreign languages Emily Davies urged her government to improve women’s education Few colleges admitted women in, and most colleges that did were owned by women
The effects of education More people could read, so more people understood the government News papers were more commonly read The price of publications became cheaper so more people bought books As the number of literate people grew, the lucrativity of writing grew.
Leisure and cultural activities As large cities grew the need for activities grew Sports such as American football, soccer, and rugby were developed Art and libraries became more available to the average man More public parks were opened because of popular demand
