Objective#1 - What were some factors that led to the rapid growth of population in the 1800 s. • Improvements in medicine, sanitation, and food storage and distribution • The development in industries drew people to the work force with new jobs • The invention of pipes, flush toilets, and water systems made for a more sanitary city. (public area)

Objective#1 Continued… !Don’t need to write this! • There became new area called suburbs-residential areas on the outskirts of cities. Families lived in suburbs, where there was less crowding, noise, and dirt, but the working members journeyed each day to jobs in the city. • Through science and technology combined to produce better methods of storing and transporting food. Pasteurization was one important step and so was the refrigeration. • Refrigerators appeared in the late 1800’s. they later became an indispensable household feature in many industrialized countries. • Diseases resulting from vitamin deficiencies, such as beri and rickets, were wiped out in more industrialized regions. Life expectancy as well as population increased.

Then they went to work to earn money to help support their families. • Middle-class children, on the other hand, went on to secondary school and often went to college. • School, in the 18 oo’s, was thought to be unsuitable for women. Towards the end of the 1800’s girls were then included in elementary education.

English children’s games using a ball and bat appear to date back to 1700’s, but it was in 1845 that a written set of rules gave baseball its modern form. People also would perform music concerts in, usually, homes of the rich or religious services. Rich folk also would commission others to do paintings or sculptures to be put on display at their museum. *FUN FACT* In 1860 the Cincinnati Red Stockings was the first professional baseball team.
