CORTES *conquers Aztecs in Mexico *ruled by Monteczuma *thought Cortes was a returned God named Quetzalcoatl. *Tenochtitlan was the Aztec capitol city (under what is today Mexico City) Cortes burned his ships—WHY? (conquer or die) He was helped by Spanish who had been enslaved by Mayans and a female Indian slave named MALINCHE who spoke Mayan and one Aztec language (She learned Spanish--baptized as Dona Marina). The Spanish brought death, conquest, intermarriage (a racial group known as mestizos), crops, & animals. Malinchista=traitor
