David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11: 1 – The army went to battle; David stayed home. Why? – Sin doesn’t happen accidentally: Ø Often planned, “opportunities” arranged Ø Often put self in a position Ø Too much idle time + alone time = lead to sin – We need to be busy about the Lord’s work Ø Use our time deliberately for Him
David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11: 1 • Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11: 2 – David “saw” Bathsheba (not the sin) – But he stayed & “beheld” (cf. Matt. 5: 28, present) – The devil works progressively Ø First, David played with the idea Ø Then, he stopped to investigate Ø Then, he stayed to enjoy Ø Then, he sent & inquired (11: 3) Ø Then, he sent & took her (11: 4) – We need to flee temptation & avoid it at all costs Ø 1 Cor. 6: 18; 1 Th. 5: 22; 2 Tim. 2: 22; 1 Pet. 2: 11
David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11: 1 • Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11: 2 • Our actions can cause others to sin – 11: 2 – The sin in 2 Samuel 11 is not all “David’s fault” – Bathsheba chose to bathe where she could be seen Ø Some say, “But it was the culture” Ø Culture does not get to dictate right & wrong – GOD DOES! – Immodest dress can cause others to stumble Ø 1 Tim. 2: 9; Rom. 14: 13; Matt. 18: 6; Mark 9: 42 – We need to recognize our role in other’s lives and do all we can to stay far away from sin
David, Bathsheba & Sin • • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11: 1 Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11: 2 Our actions can cause others to sin – 11: 2 Everyone has the opportunity to say NO to sin – 11: 4 – The sin in 2 Samuel 11 is not all “David’s fault” – Bathsheba’s act of adultery was equally as sinful – Sin is a choice Ø No such thing as “he made me do it” Ø Bathsheba could have said, “NO!” (cf. Gen. 39) – We must learn to say NO to Satan & YES to God. Ø James 4: 7 -8
David, Bathsheba & Sin • • • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11: 1 Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11: 2 Our actions can cause others to sin – 11: 2 Everyone has the opportunity to say NO to sin – 11: 4 Sin cannot be hidden – 11: 5 – Pregnancy not the sin; fornication is sin (Heb. 13: 4) – D&B were the only ones who knew about their sin – PLUS GOD, with whom are no secrets (12: 12) Ø Heb. 4: 13; Num. 32: 23; Gal. 6: 7; Psa. 139: 1 -4 – We need to remember that God sees all. Ø Psalm 139: 12; Daniel 2: 22

Ø It will “look like” it was his baby. Ø “No one will ever know. I’ll be safe. ” – We need to remember there is only one way to cover sin—God’s way (Christ’s blood + our obedience)!
David, Bathsheba & Sin • • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11: 1 Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11: 2 Our actions can cause others to sin – 11: 2 Everyone has the opportunity to say NO to sin – 11: 4 Sin cannot be hidden – 11: 5 Trying to cover sin in man’s way won’t work – 11: 6 -8 Sin compounds into more sin – 11: 6 -17 – To save his life (Lev. 20: 10), David played the hypocrite, gave Uriah drink & had him murdered – David became enslaved to sin (Rom. 6: 6, 12 -13) – We need to regard sin as powerful and enslaving and deal with it properly to stop it from growing.

Taking Care of Sin God’s Way • Believe Jesus is God’s Son – John 8: 24 • Repent of your sins – 2 Peter 3: 9 • Confess your faith in Jesus – Romans 10: 10 • Be immersed in water – Romans 6: 3 -4 – Sins are forgiven – Acts 2: 38 – Added to His church – Acts 2: 47 – Registered in heaven – Hebrews 12: 23 • Walk in the light, confessing sins – 1 Jn. 1: 7, 9
