Original Sin CCC definitions: 1849 Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity. It has been defined as "an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law. "121 417 Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human nature wounded by their own first sin and hence deprived of original holiness and justice; this deprivation is called "original sin". 418 As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin (this inclination is called "concupiscence").
Genesis 3: The Fall of Humankind How to read the account of the fall: CCC. 390 The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man. 264 Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents. 265 Together as a class, read Genesis 3.

ARE WE GOOD? Is Humanity Good? In Summary: Yes! Humans are good. • Humans are created by God and are directed toward the good. Although at times, we use our freewill to choose to turn away from the good (free will) by sinning. But we also know that we are called to live in communion with God in his goodness. Our goodness then is being connected to God as branches to a vine. God is all-good and brings the good out of even a very bad situation.
REVIEW Theme 2 and 3: Why Do We Need One Another and Are We Good? Concepts to remember from these themes: • Humans are created for community • We were created by God to be good • Humans were created with freewill so that they have the ability to love (like God!) • Our free will enables to sin (turn away from God) and we have a tendency to do this because of original sin. • God doesn’t will evil and pain, but He works through our mistakes and through the evil in the world to bring about good.
