2 -Learning theory and learning with technology
Why is theory important? • Learning theories can help us analyse and design technology enhanced learning by – raising awareness regarding underlining assumptions about how learning is/should take place’. – “providing … accounts of the variables which influence the learning process, and explanations of the ways in which that influence occurs” (Mayes & De Freitas, pg 5)
3 perspectives • Associative – Learning as activity through structured tasks • Cognitive – Learning through understanding • Situative – Learning as social practice Connole G. (2010) Pedagogical models and their use in elearning.

Activity – Analysis of examples 1 What factors are affecting learning? 2 What learning theories (assumptions about learning) are evident in these scenarios? 3 What benefits does the technology bring (espoused/actual) ? 4 What challenges does the technology bring?

Key Question • To what extent are our current conceptions of how learning takes place applicable to technology enabled learning environments?
Frameworks and models of (e)learning “There are really no models of e-learning per se – only e-enhancements of models of existing learning. ” (Mayes & De Freitas, pg 4) Do you agree?
