Handshake
Understanding the Problem What data or information is known? There are 20 people in a room Handshake with everyone is required What is unknown? We don’t know how many people are not willing to shake each others hand What are the conditions? Some people may not want to shake hands
Plan the solution 20 people including yourself. There would be 19 people, not counting yourself. Think how many people you will shake hands with. In order for everyone to shake hands and for there to be no bias, everyone should be blind folded.
Carry out the plan You will be shaking hands with 19 people. If there are N people in the room, you will at least shake the hand of one person. Since N has to be greater than 0, 1 to infinity is a possible solution.
Review and discuss your solution It was easy to figure out how many people one would shake hands with because 20 -1= 19. There might be bias among many people altering this solution. There might be few handshakes depending on the kind of people in the room. There is not much to think about, it is all common sense.
Fence Post
Understanding the problem What data or information is known? Build one side of a fence that is 12 yards long. Fence will have fence posts and rails that connect each fence post. Fence post is 1 yard away from next fence post. What is unknown? All information necessary is given. What are the conditions? Amount of connectors needed.
Plan the solution Draw out a picture of 12 posts and scale it to be same amount of space apart. Actually do this is real life. Then place as many connectors needed.
Carry out the plan Put 12 fence posts of the ground 1 yard apart. Put as many connectors needed for the fence to be complete. There will be 11 connectors needed. If the side of the fence was N yards long, your could need more than one fence post to complete the job. 1 to infinity is greater than 0.
Review and discuss your solution. Always plan out a project using visuals. This will make the plan easier to finish. I came up with 11 connectors needed because one for every two will come out to be 11. Once we start thinking of a solution and planning it out, it will be easier to solve the problem.
