What is the Lymph System? It is a network of organs, lymph nodes, ducts and vessels that produce and transport lymph from the tissues into the blood stream.
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph fluid • straw-colored • Clear • Fluid that flows throughout the lymph system. • Made of white blood cells- (Lymphocytes) to fight bacteria. 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 6
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph vessels • Closely parallel to blood vessels (veins) • transport lymph • Only flow in one direction • Carry lymph fluid all over the body 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 7
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph vessels parallel to blood vessels 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 8
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph vessels • Lacteals • Specialized lymph vessels in the small intestines 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 9
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph vessels • Lymphatic ducts • Large lymph vessels Thoracic duct Also called the left lymphatic duct receives lymph from the left side as pictured. Lymphatic vessel that collects lymph from the left chest, abdomen and lower limbs 10
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph vessels • Lymphatic ducts • Large lymph vessels Right Thoracic Duct- Fluid from the upper chest neck and head. Thoracic Duct- Fluid from the rest of the body. 11
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph nodes • tiny, oval-shaped structures • Range in size from a pinhead to an almondusually can’t be seen or felt. • Clusters in the neck, armpits, groin inside chest and abdomen. Lymph node 12
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph nodes • Located all throughout the body. • There are many lymph nodes- they filter the lymph fluid and help produce white blood cells. 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 13
Structures of the lymphatic system Lymph nodes When bacteria are recognized by the lymph fluid, the nodes produce more infection fighting WBC’s. This causes the lymph nodes to 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the swell. lymphatic system 14
Structures of the lymphatic system Tonsils • 3 pairs • masses of lymphatic tissue 1. Palatine tonsils • sides of throat 2. Adenoids • upper throat 3. Lingual tonsils • back of tongue 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 15
Structures of the lymphatic system Spleen • Largest Lymphatic structure • Sac-like mass • Located in the LUQ 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 17
Structures of the lymphatic system Spleen • Fist shaped, purple • Normally can’t feel it. • Filters blood and recycles RBC’s. • Helps fight bacteria. • Becomes enlarged with mono and certain cancers- Lymphoma 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 18
Structures of the Thymus gland lymphatic system • • • located in the upper, anterior chest also an endocrine gland Makes T-Lymphocytesthese have a memory and remember how to fight an infection you have already been exposed to. 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 19
Structures of the lymphatic system Thymus gland • Shrinks by early teen years. • Decreased thymus gland is thought to be related to decreased immunity in the elderly. 2. 03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 20
