Counterculture • Young people challenged and rejected the values and beliefs of mainstream America and the older generation and older people considered the lifestyles of the young unacceptable. This created a “Generation Gap. ”
Hippies • a non-conformist group characterized by an emphasis on universal love and world peace • rejected society’s rules, especially regarding dress, personal appearance, and living habits
Hippie Fashion • Long hair, beads, bell bottom jeans, bare feet or sandals, head bands, loose-fitting or ethnic clothing.
Summer of Love and Flower Power • Summer of 1967 • Hippies urged peace, love, and “flower power” • They handed out flowers to people they felt were symbols of oppression, such as police officers • “Make Love Not War” was their slogan

Woodstock Music and Art Fair • Nearly 500, 000 people, 3 days in August 1969 • Musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Who and The Grateful Dead played. • They danced and sang to the music, no one seemed to mind the rain and the mud • Reinforced the idea that it was possible for people to come together without anger and violence. • “The Woodstock Generation”
The Presidential Election • Televised debates between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy were considered a turning point. • The handsome, youthful Kennedy looked tan and fit on TV and won the election
The Vietnam War • For the first time in history, Americans were able to watch nightly broadcasts detailing progress of the war. • They saw first hand how many people were being killed each day • This helped change the minds of Americans about the war in Vietnam.
