The 1960’s in the US The 1960’s was arguably the most important year in American history An immense amount of significant events happened throughout this decade which changed the US forever
The Civil Rights Movement which vaulted African American people from a position of subservience to a point at the end of the decade where at least in a legal sense equal rights had been secured by passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fairing House Act of 1968
The Vietnam protests This was actually a very critical and significant event in many ways. It was the beginning of the time when Americans began to doubt their government and the truthfulness of the people who serve in it. A little known fact about our system of government is that until that time, Presidents basically were dictators when it came to foreign policy and defense issues. The media went along, the public went along and there was a belief that ordinary people were too far removed to understand these issues and no President would ever act against our interests.
The pill and the sexual revolution Birth control pills became available in about 1960. Before this time, most people had to be far more careful when it came to sex anyway. When a simple means to eliminate threat of pregnancy was developed, it significantly changed the way that many people thought about premarital sex. It’s also worth noting that the worst sexually transmitted diseases of the day could be treated easily with a single shot of penicillin.
Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination Charismatic Martin Luther King who was a civil rights advocate and exceptionally gifted speaker, followed other great leaders throughout history by using nonviolent means together with the power of speech and managed to create change through his influence created by the strong following he had.
