WHO OR WHEN ARE 1927? • 1927 was formed in 2005 by Paul Barritt and Suzanne Andrade Paul Barritt was an animator & illustrator, Suzanne Andrade was a writer and a performer. They were shortly joined by Esme Appleton, a performer afterwards. • They wanted to merge together live performance and animation into their performances. • They had their first show “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue” in 2007 at the Edinburgh Fringe
FOLLOWING ON FROM THAT SLIDE Central to 1927’s vision is the exploration of the relationship between live performer and animation. 1927 strive to create dynamic filmic performance where seemingly disparate elements of live performance and animation work in a minutely choreographed harmony.
• Merged animation and live performance • In 2010 1927 performed their second show The Animals and Children took to the Streets at the Sydney Opera House (in Sydney). • Having low expectations for the show’s success, it was performed over 400 times in 80 venues across 28 countries including 3 seasons at the National Theatre London • It even won an OFFIE award for Best Entertainment, which was great until Paul Barritt left it in a taxi… That Paul is so silly.
• 1927 incorporated animation into their live performances by having the projection of the animations behind the actors • 1927 was awarded the Peter Brook Empty Space Award for Best Ensemble based on Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea • Following on from this award, Jo Crowley became a permant producer for 1927
