18/01/2022 Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Here is a line graph showing how a sunflower grows over time. How is this graph different to a bar chart? How would you read the height of the sunflower in week 3? How would you find out what week it was when the sunflower measured 45 cm tall?

18/01/2022 Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Here is a line graph showing the temperature of a classroom during one day. Can you tell the story of the graph? What happens to the temperature? What is the warmest the classroom gets? What is the coolest the classroom gets? How much does the temperature increase by?

18/01/2022 Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Here is a line graph showing the temperature of a classroom during one day. Can you tell the story of the graph? What happens to the temperature? It gets warmer up to lunchtime then cooler again. What is the warmest the classroom gets? 24 degrees What is the coolest the classroom gets? 14 degrees How much does the temperature increase by? 10 degrees

Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? ACTIVITY 1: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What is the temperature in the classroom at 10 am? When is the classroom at its warmest? When is the classroom at its coolest? How much warmer is it at 12: 00 than at 3: 00? Predict what the temperature of the classroom was at 8: 00. What do you think will happen to the temperature after 3 pm? Why?

18/01/2022 Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? ACTIVITY 1: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What is the temperature in the classroom at 10 am? 18°C When is the classroom at its warmest? 1: 00 When is the classroom at its coolest? 14°C How much warmer is it at 12: 00 than at 3: 00? 2°C Predict what the temperature of the classroom was at 8: 00. 12°C What do you think will happen to the temperature after 3 pm? Why? It will gradually get cooler as the afternoon goes on the temperature will stay at one temperature throughout the night.

18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Hannah grows a sunflower and measured it once a week every week for 8 weeks. The table shows her measurements. Think about how you would represent this in a graph. Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2

18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? TALKING TIME: Hannah grows a sunflower and measured it once a week every week for 8 weeks. The table shows her measurements. You need to draw a dot above the week, matching the height of the sunflower. Then you need to use a ruler to join the dots and create a continuous line. The sunflower keeps on growing until week 6. The line then flattens. Remember: we use a line graph for continuous data and bar graphs for discreet data (grouped). Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2

Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Dylan fills up a bucket with water ready to wash his dad’s car. As he carries it outside he noticed that the bucket was leaking. Below is a table of information showing the amount of water in the bucket at 5 minute intervals. Use the data in the table and represent it in a line graph. Write a question you could ask a friend about your graph.

Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? ACTIVITY 2: Dylan fills up a bucket with water ready to wash his dad’s car. As he carries it outside he noticed that the bucket was leaking. Below is a table of information showing the amount of water in the bucket at 5 minute intervals. Use the data in the table and represent it in a line graph. Write a question you could ask a friend about your graph. How much water was in the bucket after 10 minutes?

18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? TALKING TIME: Ella pushed a toy car across the ground. Which graph shows this? How do you know? Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2

18/01/2022 Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? TALKING TIME: Ella pushed a toy car across the ground. Which graph shows this? The first one. How do you know? The toy car would travel as far as it could after being pushed then would stop and would not travel anymore distance but the time would still move on.

18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Draw a line graph. It needs to show the story below. Tim runs a bath. He uses hot water at first then adds a bit of cold and hot and to finish his bath he uses cold on its own. Draw a line to show the temperature of the bath over the 10 minutes that the bath is run for. Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2

18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? ACTIVITY 3: Your line graph should look like this.

LIGHTBULB CHALLENGE: Which one doesn’t belong? Why? Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2

Year 4 Statistics Lesson 2 18/01/2022 Can I read and interpret continuous line graphs? Which one doesn’t belong? Why? This graph uses discrete data and should be used in a bar chart NOT a line graph. Different colours are separate ideas so separate bars would make the data clearer.
