Controls what enters and leaves the cell, allowing chemical reactions to happen Where photosynthesis happens Controls chemical reactions and holds organelles including the mitochondria Contains sap to help maintain cell pressure and control movement of water Contains DNA and controls the cells reactions www. astreadearne. org Provides structure and protection to the cell

What do they do? ? Part Function Found in Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell Plant and animal cells Jelly-like substance, where chemical reactions happen Plant and animal cells Nucleus Carries genetic information and controls what happens inside the cell Plant and animal cells Mitochondria Where most respiration reactions happen Plant and animal cells Vacuole Contains a liquid called cell sap, which keeps the cell firm Plant cells only Cell wall Made of a tough substance called cellulose, which supports the cell Plant cells only Cell membrane Cytoplasm www. astreadearne. org

Magnification Task Show your working out in your book. 1. What is the total magnification of a microscope with an eyepiece magnification of x 10 and an objective lens magnification of x 30? 2. Laila wants to observe an onion cell under the microscope. What is the total magnification if the eyepiece magnification of x 40 and an objective lens magnification of x 20? 3. What is the total magnification of a microscope with an eyepiece magnification of x 40 and an objective lens magnification of x 30? 4. Challenge: What is the objective lens magnification if the total magnification is: x 200 and the eye piece is x 5. www. astreadearne. org
How to use a microscope www. astreadearne. org
How to use a Microscope Put the steps into the correct order: Move the stage to the lowest position Look through the eyepiece and turn the coarse focus knob slowly until you see the object Place the object you want to observe on the stage Select the objective lens with the lowest magnification Turn the fine focus knob until your object comes into focus Repeat steps 1 – 6 using an objective lens with a higher magnification www. astreadearne. org
