Horace Mann’s Home Horace Mann’s was born in Franklin, Mass. on May 4, 1796. His home was located on what was known as “Mann’s Plain. ”
Today, it is the location of the Horace Mann Plaza.

Horace Mann and his brother Stephen enjoyed swimming at Uncas Pond, Franklin, MA One day, instead of attending church services, Stephen decided to go swimming alone. Sadly, he drowned.
• Dr. Emmons, the minister declared Stephen “wicked” for swimming instead of attending services. • This frightened Horace Mann, and led him to believe that books in school should not include frightful stories about children being punished for misbehaving.
• Mann served as a State Representative and as a Senator. • He was the first Secretary of the Board of Education. Can you see his statue?
