12 December 2021 Commercial Applications of Cells Starter: How do batteries work?
Objectives • What are different commercial applications of cells? • Where are different electrochemical cells used?
Commercial Applications • Electrochemical cells can be used as a commercial source of electrical energy • They are commonly called cells or batteries • The EMF of the electrochemical cell is the voltage f the battery or cell • Some cells are non-rechargeable but you can also get rechargeable cells
Tasks: • Ensure both sections of RP 8 are completed • Repeat step one with a soaked filter paper salt bridge • Research a different type of cell and create a “mini-presentation” to show to the rest of the group – including a handout • There are some questions on the Padlet site to help guide you in what to include in your presentation • As part of your presentation, you should have a ‘summary slide’ or poster to give as a handout
Non-rechargeable cells • Some questions to guide your mini-presentation • What are some examples of non-rechargeable cells? • What does a non-rechargeable cell look like? • What reactions are taking place? • What are some standard EMFs for the cells? • What is the overall equation for reactions that are taking place?
Rechargeable cells • Some questions to guide your mini-presentation • What is a rechargeable cell? • Why are they useful? • What are the reactions that can take place in a recharageable cell? • Look at nickel-cadmium, lead-acid and lithium ion cells – giving information and equations for these
Hydrogen Fuel Cell • Some questions to guide your mini-presentation • What is a fuel cell? • What is a hydrogen fuel cell? • What reactions occur in a hydrogen fuel cell? • Where can the fuel cells be used? • What are the benefits and risks associated with these cells?
Ethanol Fuel Cell • Some questions to guide your mini-presentation • What is a fuel cell? • What is an ethanol fuel cell? • What reactions occur in an ethanol fuel cell? • Where can the fuel cells be used? • What are the benefits and risks associated with these cells?
