Jacob Riis published How the Other Half Lives, 1890 Alexus Montgomery • photojournalism by Jacob Riis to expose the dangerous living conditions of the poor immigrants in the slums of New York in the 1880's. • Riis used photgraphic descrptions, statistics, sketches as well as the invention of flash photograpy, he was able to capture the living and working conditions. • He eventually turned his documentary into a book when it became popular to the rich and middle class.

Homestead Strike, 1892 Alexus Montgomery • An industrial strike in Homestead, Pennsylvania where the steel workers (AA) and the Carneige Steel Company on July 6, 1892. • The state militia came and they began fighting with the workers. In the end 12 were killed and 23 injured on both sides. • It caused a setback for workers rights until the 1930's when the Federal Government recognized these unions.
