Checks and Balances & Separation of Power � Legislative Branch (or Congress)= MAKES the laws � Executive Branch (or the President)= ENFORCES the laws � Judicial Branch (or Supreme Court)= INTERPRETS the laws
Legislative Branch-MAKES � House of Representatives and Senate make up Congress � Must be 30 years old and a citizen for 9 years to be a Senator � Must be 25 years old and a citizen for 7 years to be elected to the House of Representatives � There are 2 Senators in each state, elected every 6 years � House of Representatives members are chosen by population and elected every 2 years
Executive Branch--ENFORCES � Also known as the President � Most important duty of president is to enforce the laws � Can veto a law that Congress passes � Has the power to declare war
Judicial Branch--INTERPRETS � Also known as the Supreme Court � Has the power to strike down a law if it is unconstitutional (judicial review) � There are 9 Supreme Court justices (or judges)
Homework! � There will be a quiz on the Bill of Rights on Wednesday. You will need to label 1 -10 and tell me which rights belong to each number. I will choose one randomly that you will need to describe. � Create a rap or a poem about the Bill of Rights. Each amendment (1 -10) must be included. They will be read or performed on THURSDAY.
