Creating “Cultural Competence” � In order to tolerate other people, you should practice cultural competence. � Cultural competence means: 1. You recognize that no culture is “better” than another culture. � We’re all different, and that’s okay!

Cultural Competence Scale 1. Cultural Competence Full understanding of your own culture and exploration of other cultures to understand the strengths of each. This requires people to step out of their comfort zone by dialoging with people different from yourself. 2. Tolerance & Acceptance Having the ability to not think one culture is better than another. 3. Ethnocentricism (Live & Let Live) Thoughts and actions that demonstrate the belief that one culture is better than another. Usually, people have an attitude of live and let live, which roughly translates into, “You stay away from me and I’ll stay away from you. ” 4. Discriminate, Disdain & Hatred The practice of unfairly judging another by stereotyping all members of a certain group and discriminate against them. People in this category commonly use racial epitaphs and/or make fun of others. 5. Acting on Negative Emotions The process of openly hating and acting violently towards specific groups of people (KKK, race wars/ gang violence, Holocaust, genocide)

How people dress, what they eat, what they do for fun, how they spend their free time, what they believe in, and how they act is defined by their culture. 2. Culture gives people a sense of identity. Having gender identity, age, religion, history, and certain material possessions provide the tools through which self-identity is created.

People may think that just because I’m white, I’m rich. This isn’t true; in fact, I’ve had a job since I was fifteen years old and worked in order to pay my way through college. Additionally, some people may discriminate against students from San Fernando and think that everyone is gang affiliated. This is untrue, however, and people shouldn’t judge someone based on the neighborhood that they come from. Everyone should be Ex #2 and treated equally and with tolerance. Conclusion explanation
