Objectives: • Students will be able to: – 1) Discuss ways parents and guardians teach family values. – 2) Identify traits and behaviors associated with having good character. – 3) List & discuss ways to develop, maintain, or improve self-respect. – 4) Describe responsible actions that promote positive self-esteem. – 5) List ways a positive social-emotional environment improves health status. – 6) List & discuss strategies to improve the socialemotional environment.
What to Know About Good Character • Value: A standard or belief. – Where do you values come from? • Self-Control: The degree to which a person regulates his or her own behavior. • Good Character: A person who uses self control and acts on responsible values. • Delayed Gratification: Voluntarily postponing an immediate reward in order to complete a task before enjoying a reward.

Self-Respect • Having high regard for oneself. • How to Develop Self-Respect – Make a character check – Control the belief statements that motivate you. – Choose actions that promote self-respect
Actions That Promote Self-Respect • • • Pay attention to your appearance Make a list of responsible actions and review that list often. Be a friend to yourself by enjoying activities by yourself. Write your feelings in a journal. Make spending time with members of your family or a mentor a priority. Care for other people the way you would like them to care for you. Let other people know what helps you feel special. Support the interests of family members and friends and ask them to support your interests. Ask family members and friends which of your actions show you have character. Get plenty of exercise to generate feelings of well-being
Self-Esteem • A person's belief about his or her worth. • Positive Self-Esteem: A person's belief that he or she is worthy and deserves respect. • Negative Self-Esteem: A person's belief that he or she is not worthy and does not deserve respect.

How the Social-Emotional Environment Affects Health Status • Positive social-emotional environment – Exists when you receive plenty of social-emotional boosters. • Social-Emotional Booster: An interpersonal contact that helps a person feel encouragement & support, choose responsible behavior, and recognize options. • Negative social-emotional environment – Exists when you experience too many socialemotional pollutants. • Social-Emotional Pollutant: An interpersonal contact that limits options or may cause a person to feel discouraged and to choose wrong behavior.
Positive Interactions • How to Improve the Social-Emotional Environment. – Minimize or avoid contact with people who put you down. – Use positive self-statements if you are with a person or group of people who are negative. – Spend time with a mentor. – Join a support group. – Expand the network of people with whom you communicate needs, wants & emotions. – Give others social-emotional boosters.
