let (someone) know This means to tell the person something, to give them some information or a notification Let me know if you need any help with your assignment.
let’s say This is used to introduce an imaginary or hypothetical situation Let’s say you miss your flight to California. What would you do then?
let’s see This means “I/we want to discover” I’m not sure that your friends want to go to the movies tonight. Let’s see what they want to do.
let’s call it day This means “let’s end what we are doing for the day” You can say this whether the work is finished or still unfinished. I’ve been studying for my biology final for hours. I’m exhausted – let’s call it a day.
let’s shake on it This means we want to confirm an agreement by shaking hands. I promise to repay the $50 I borrowed last week – let’s shake on it.
let it slide This means to choose to ignore or overlook a problem or error. Even though I left out some bibliographic notes on my essay, my teacher let it slide and she didn’t take any points off my final grade.
let (someone) in on This means to tell someone a secret, or some information that is known by very few people. I’ll let you in on a little secret, Jane really likes you and wants to get to know you better.
let go / let it go Let go of something means to stop holding it Please don’t let go of my hand until we cross the street. Let it go means to overlook something (similar to “let it slide”) or stop trying to control it. She can be so annoying around men, but I just have to let it go, before she drives me crazy
let it be This means to tell a person to leave thing or situation alone, don’t interfere or worry about it. Ever since his wife left him he has been so sad. I’m just going to let him be until he’s ready to talk about it.
let your guard down This means to relax and stop trying to protect yourself against competition or trouble. After a few bad relationships, I was finally able to let me guard down after I met Jim, who is now my husband.
