Situation • Walter Junior is not interested in eating the cholesterol-free, imitation bacon that his mother has prepared for breakfast. • He playfully banters with his father about becoming older, as it is his dad’s birthday.

9. • Mr White, are you a smoker? No, why do you ask? • Best case scenario, with chemo, I’ll live maybe another couple a years.

Situation • Walt’s doctor has just given him the news that he has cancer and has only a couple of years left to live.

Question • What is a best-case scenario? • Cliché meaning the optimum outcome that could occur. (the opposite is the worst-case scenario. )

Situation • The owner of the car wash is not happy about Walt’s daydreaming. In fact, Walt has just received the devastating news that he has cancer, which makes it hard for him to think about anything else, especially mundane work matters.

• Pottery Barn is an American-based home furnishing store chain. • Cheese-dick = A person, usually a man, who generally does not lack in mental ability but lacks charisma and social skill.

Situation • Hank and his partner, Steve Gomez are discussing the color of the house. Hank thinks Gomez is unmanly because he describes it as ‘sage’ wile Gomez thinks Hank has no refinement as he cannot recognize different shades of green. .

12. • Cap’n Cook? That’s a white boy’s name. Dopey as hell too. • I got you 20 bucks says he’s a beaner. All right. You’re on. • One whiff will kill you. That’s why the respirators. • Cheer up Gomey. You people still got J. Lo.

Situation • Hank and Gomez make a bet about the people in the house. Hank thinks they must be Mexican but Gomez thinks he is white (Caucasian). Hank wins. • Beaner = Mexican (eats beans) • Dopey = not intelligent • Whiff = smell

13. • How’d you find me? You’re still in our filing system. • Honestly, I never expected you to amount to much … but methamphetamine. I didn’t picture that. • I don’t know what you think you’re doing here, Mr. White. If you’re planning on giving me some bullshit

Situation • Jesse doesn’t know why Walt has tracked him down to his house. He wonders if he is a Christian trying to help him change his life and can’t believe it when Walt says he wants to learn to make methamphetamine.

Questions • What kind of person doesn’t amount to much? • How does Walt force Jesse to accept his business suggestion?

14. • You got your usual paraphernalia, Griffin beakers but -- the pièce de résistance - round bottom boiling flask, 5000 milliliters.

Situation • Walt is describing and explaining the lab equipment he has stolen from the school which he shows some pride in knowing about.

15. • No, you don’t. An Erlenmeyer flask is for general mixing and titration. You do not apply heat to an Erlenmeyer flask. That’s what the boiling flask is for. • Did you not learn anything in my chemistry class? • No. You flunked me, remember?

Situation • Walt is explaining some aspects of chemistry to Jesse but Jesse thinks he already knows how to make methamphetamine better than Walt.

Questions • Did you ever flunk a test/course? • Did you ever make anything or do anything that you think was ‘the bomb? ’

16. • Lab safety. We’re also gonna have an emergency eye wash station. • These chemicals and their fumes are toxic -- or didn’t you know that? • Hey, you can dress up like a faggot if you want. Not me.

Situation • Walt is establishing the rules for making his lab but Jesse think all this precaution and concern with safety is unnecessary.

17. • This doesn’t stay more than a day. • What, aren’t we gonna cook here? • No, we’re not gonna cook here. This is my house. I don’t shit where I eat.

Situation • Walt is planning to store the equipment and set up the lab at Jesse’s place but Jesse is more streetwise about these things and tells him they need to do it somewhere else. • I don’t shit where I eat = you should not cause trouble in a place, group, or situation in which you regularly spend time.

18. • But a mobile meth lab’d be the bomb. • You can drive way out in the boonies. Be all evasive.

Situation • Jesse suggests an alternative way to set up a lab – by using a large mobile home.

19. • Nah. Come on, man! Some straight like you, giant stick up his ass. . . • all a sudden at age, what, sixty he’s just gonna break bad? • It’s weird, is all. It doesn’t compute. If you’re like. . . crazy • or something. . . if you’ve gone crazy, or depressed. I’m just saying. That’s something I need to know about. That affects me.

he’s just gonna break bad? • = change from being a good citizen to doing illegal things like making and selling drugs

Situation • Jesse is now wondering why Walt wants to become involved in this. It doesn’t make any sense to him that a teacher would want to make drugs.

20. • What’s wrong, Chief? You having a little trouble walking? • Get off me!

Situation • Walt attacks the students who are mocking his son. His wife, Skyler, can’t believe it but Walter Jnr. Is proud of his dad. We can see the start of Walter’s change into a ‘bad’ person.

21. • Jesus, you got crystals in here two inches, three inches long. • This is pure glass. • You’re a goddamned artist. This is art. Mr. White. . • It’s just basic chemistry. But thank you, Jesse. I’m glad it’s acceptable. • Acceptable? Every jibbhead from here to Timbuktu’s gonna want a taste!

Situation • Jesse is amazed at the quality of the crystal meth that Walter has made. He gives him lavish praise.

22. • Yeah, I talked to him. He says when the feds came, you were out stickin’ it in some neighbor lady. • Hey, you know. I got lucky twice. • Yeah? I dunno, man. Emilio. . ? He thinks maybe you dimed on him.

Situation • Emilio is wondering why Jesse avoided arrest in the bust on their lab as he was fortunately upstairs with a neighboring woman when the police arrived. • Feds = police • stickin’ it in some neighbor lady = having sex with her • Dimed = informed on

Question • How did Jesse get lucky twice? • By avoiding being arrested and getting to have sex with the neighbor.

23. • You really cook that batch? You an artist. It’s a damn shame. • W-What if I showed you my secret? Every cook’s got his recipe – what if I taught you mine?

Situation • Walt is thinking quickly to avoid being killed. He offers to show Krazy-8 and Emilio how he made his crystal meth

24. • Red phosphorus, when heat is applied. . . oxidizes and yields carbonyl chloride. Phosphene gas. • One good whiff of it. . .

• Walt is explaining the chemical process Situation involved in making the phosphene gas that knocked out Emilio and Krazy-8 and allowed him to escape.

25. • Walt, I don’t know what is going on with you lately • Nothing. I’m fine. • -- Whatever it is, I’ll tell you this. I do not like it when you don’t talk to me. The worst thing you can do is shut me out.

Situation • Skyler has noticed that Walt has changed lately. She doesn’t know what has been happening and he hasn’t said anything to her but she wants him to tell her.
