Introduction to Deserts LO: TBAT explain what it is like in a hot desert 1. What does a climate graph show? Temperature and precipitation 2. Where in the world gets most of the sun’s energy: The Equator or the poles? The equator 3. How can climate change affect cold environments? It can cause the ice or permafrost to melt 4. Which biome is the UK found in? Deciduous temperate forest 5. How have animals adapted to cold environments? Thicker layer of fat to keep warm, thick fur to keep warm, small ears to keep warmth 6. What is the difference between weather and climate? Weather is what you can expect day-to-day, climate is what weather you can expect year on year

I can confidently explain the location of deserts, and their physical characteristics I can

I can confidently explain the location of deserts, and their physical characteristics I can begin explain why deserts are located where they are, and what they are like I can describe where deserts are found and what they are like

What do you know? Your task: • • Mind map or bullet point anything

What do you know? Your task: • • Mind map or bullet point anything you think you know about deserts already You could think about • Climate (temperature and precipitation) • Animals • Plants • People • Location Deserts

Your task: Describe where in the world deserts can be found How do I

Your task: Describe where in the world deserts can be found How do I do this? ! • Use the world map at the back of your HWK booklet to help you • “Deserts can be found in every continent except… They can be found in countries such as… They are normally found on or above the tropics of…”

 • But if the equator is where most of the sun’s rays are,

• But if the equator is where most of the sun’s rays are, and that makes it a hot area…. Why isn’t that where deserts are when they are so hot? ! • It’s all to do with evaporation… what does that word mean?

 • As the sun warms the equator, there’s the most amount of evaporation

• As the sun warms the equator, there’s the most amount of evaporation happening here. • When water evaporates it becomes clouds / rain (we will learn more on this in LC 4) • It rains over land, up to near the tropics. (this is where tropical rainforests are, which we look at in year 8) • By the time you get to the location of deserts, there is very little rainfall left, but you still get high temperatures!

Your task: 1. Circle the correct answer in the sentence on your sheet Use

Your task: 1. Circle the correct answer in the sentence on your sheet Use your sheet to answer these questions in full sentences in your book 1. What biome is found closest to the equator? 2. Why is there high rainfall near the equator? 3. What sort of climate do hot deserts have? Challenge: In your own words, explain why there is a difference in the location of desert biomes compared to polar biomes

Using this climate graph to help you, describe the climate in deserts How do

Using this climate graph to help you, describe the climate in deserts How do I do this? ! • “The months with the highest temperature in Cairo are…. • The months that have the coolest temperatures are… • In Cairo, the rainfall is….

What similarities and differences are there between these two climate graphs?

What similarities and differences are there between these two climate graphs?

 • Revisit your mind-map from the start of the lesson. • What can

• Revisit your mind-map from the start of the lesson. • What can you add to it (in purple pen!) that you have learned in the hour? • Be prepared to share something!

Next steps…. • How can plants and animals survive in deserts?
