YOU can’t understand how WWII BEGAN, unless you understand how WWI ENDED” AN UNSTEADY PEACE… after WWI
WWI ALLIES: • Great Britain • France • Italy • Russia (Leaves the war before it officially ends) • The United States (enters 1917…three years after the war started) CENTRAL POWERS: • Germany • Austria-Hungary • Ottoman Empire
Final Toll • 4 years long • 26 million died – Russia = most deaths – U. S. = least deaths Cost of war- $350 billion.
World War I Casualties
Treaty of Versailles • Peace treaty signed in 1919 to end WWI • The two most important results of the treaty were: – Germany had to pay war damages to the Allies$33 billion!! – WAR-GUILT Clause placed the blame of WWI entirely on Germany alone. • There were three inherent weaknesses that would help lead to WWII. • It left a time-bomb just waiting to blow in any second.
Three Major Weaknesses 1. The treaty humiliated Germany. The war-guilt clause caused all Germany citizens to DETEST the treaty. Also, there was no way that Germany could pay the huge financial reparations to the Allies. 2. Russia was left out of the peace talks. Russia had fought for three years with the Allies, and they had lost more men than any other country, but they had no voice in the peace conference. Also lost more territory after the war. 3. The treaty didn’t address anything about helping countries rebuild after the war.
League of Nations • In Pres. Wilson’s 14 Points, League of Nations was the “ 14 th Point” – A peace keeping organization that excluded Russia and Germany • U. S. did not join the League of Nations (even though it was OUR presidents idea) – America did not agree with Pres. Wilson- they wanted to STAY out of European affairs
The U. S. Moving Close to War • Divide the entire space into 3 columns • 1 st column: EVENT • 2 nd column: Definition • 3 rd column: U. S. involvement • Draw 5 rows; in the “EVENT” column, write: • • • Neutrality Acts of 1939 (p. 550) Building America’s Defense, 1940 (p. 551) Lend Lease Act, 1941 (p. 552) Atlantic Charter, 1941 (p. 554) Pearl Harbor, 1941 (p. 555)
U. S. Involvement • In the last column, determine whether the U. S. actions made them MOVE CLOSER TO WAR or MOVE FARTHER AWAY FROM WAR by maintaining a policy of isolationism • Rating Scale from 1 -10 1= wanting no involvement in the foreign affairs of other nations 10= moving closer to joining WWII • Then, EXPLAIN your reason why you gave that event the rating
