1 Timothy 2: 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions,

1 Timothy 2: 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, “PAUL’S EXHORTATIONS TO PRAYER” I Timothy 2: 18 Verse 1. o Paul instructs Timothy to encourage the church to pray when they come together. o “I exhort therefore” that this be done. o It should be considered of primary importance, not secondary! o A needed exhortation even for us today as well. Paul now begins to give directions on conducting public worship. o And in particular…. . those who lead in that worship. o The contrast will be shown clearly between the role of the man and the woman in such assemblies.

1 Timothy 2: 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions,

1 Timothy 2: 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, THE FOUR ASPECTS OF PRAYER MENTIONED: Supplications (requests…. . entreaties) o Earnest pleading of a humble petitioner. Phil. 4: 6 Prayers (All-inclusive expression) o May also be emphasizing coming to God in due reverence. Romans 15: 30 Intercessions o Special petitions in behalf of another. o To express concern for others & their needs. We intercede for others, not from any merit of our own, but from concern!!!! With thanksgiving. o From a sense of gratitude for what God has already done. o His mercy, goodness, kindness, forgiveness, care over us. o Most of all that God has provided a way of salvation.

1 Timothy 2: 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions,

1 Timothy 2: 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, For Whom Shall We Pray? “All men” o This is the generic word for “mankind” or “humankind”. o As opposed to the narrow & bigoted attitudes. o For learned & unlearned. o For rich, poor, black, white, red, yellow. o For male & female. o Christian & non-Christian. o For all need God’s grace & mercy.

1 Timothy 2: 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we

1 Timothy 2: 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. “Kings and all in Authority” ü Rulers & leading people who affect lives of masses. ü Reason…. because they need our prayers. ü Both the good and bad. ü Civil & world affairs evidently can be influenced by our prayers to God. PURPOSE OF PRAYER (WHY PRAY FOR SUCH? ) So that God’s people might lead a quiet & peaceable life. Ø So rulers will allow God’s people to worship & serve Him without persecution. Ø Quiet----Tranquility from without (no disturbances) Ø Peaceable---Tranquility from within (assurance). Ø Protect us from oppression that makes life easier.

1 Timothy 2: 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we

1 Timothy 2: 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, PURPOSE OF PRAYER (WHY PRAY FOR SUCH? ) “In all godliness & honesty” Ø Godliness---devoutness, fulfilling duties to God. Ø Honesty---Gravity, decorum, dignity, decency. --Honorableness, seriousness of purpose. Such has the approval of God. v This is what God wants…it is good & acceptable. v God is greatly pleased that His children have the same concerns that he has of his creatures.

1 Timothy 2: 4 NKJV[4] who desires all men to be saved and to

1 Timothy 2: 4 NKJV[4] who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. PURPOSE OF PRAYER (WHY PRAY FOR SUCH? ) Because God wants all men to be saved. Ø He is Savior…. his very nature is to save. Ø He wants all men to be saved. Ø His grace & mercy is extended to all without distinction. Ø He has commissioned His gospel to be preached to every creature, all nations. Mk. 16: 15. This salvation comes by men coming to a knowledge of the truth. Ø If man is not saved…. . it is his own fault. Ø It is a great sin to choose to reject one’s only hope of eternal redemption. Ø Men must believe & obey this gospel (truth).

1 Timothy 2: 5 NKJV[5] For there is one God and one Mediator between

1 Timothy 2: 5 NKJV[5] For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, NOW CONCERNING THIS SALVATION: It comes from the ONE GOD of heaven. Ø Not many gods, but the one true God. Dt 6: 4. Is 44: 6. 45: 22. Mt 28: 19. Mk 12: 29 -33. Jn 17: 3. Ro 3: 29, 30. Ø The one who created us in his own image. Ø The same God of the Old Testament that Jews worshipped. It is made possible by the ONE MEDIATOR between God and Man. Ø Not many mediators, but one only…. John 14: 6; Acts 4: 12; Ø A mediator is one who intervenes between two parties. Ø Jesus is the perfect mediator between God and man: Ø Since He is both God & man himself. Ø Heb. 2: 14 -18. Ø A mediator is one who brings peace…. Jesus is our means of peace with God.

1 Timothy 2: 6 NKJV[6] who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be

1 Timothy 2: 6 NKJV[6] who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, NOW CONCERNING THIS SALVATION: His death made this redemption possible. Isaiah 53: 6; Mat 26: 28 o Restoration of harmony now made possible. o He gave himself a ransom for all. o Ransom---to give one’s life for another. Mk. 10: 45 o Pray to this ONE GOD for all men to be saved because Jesus has provided the means for that salvation. o Unfortunately, Salvation is to be offered to all, but not all will accept it. o The ransom of Christ must be appropriated. o The ransom is adequate for all who will accept it. o Such great news was not fully manifested until the coming of Christ. a) Gal. 4: 4 -5 o That this was not for Jews only, but for all men. o It is now in the process of being made known.

1 Timothy 2: 7 NKJV[7] for which I was appointed a preacher and an

1 Timothy 2: 7 NKJV[7] for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying-a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. NOW CONCERNING THIS SALVATION: Which message has been given through Paul: § Who is a preacher of this message. § Paul had not appointed himself to preach, but God! § So, he proclaims that message & only that message. § Who was also appointed an apostle. § One especially sent to the Gentile world. § God took special steps to see that this was done. § Paul affirms with an oath that this is the truth. § And if God went to all this trouble, then we should pray for them. § Do as Paul—instruct in faith & knowledge of God’s great message to the lost.

1 Timothy 2: 8 NKJV[8] I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting

1 Timothy 2: 8 NKJV[8] I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; I DESIRE THEN THAT MEN PRAY EVERYWHERE. Ø The desire from the man of God is that Christians, that is you and I pray everywhere. In verse 1 he says pray for all men, now pray everywhere. Why? Ø Jesus says that God will find worshippers to worship him in Spirit and in truths. John 4: 21. Ø Lifting holy hands means that we are clean in front of the Lord and that nothing is done by us in an evil way. Ge 14: 22; psalm 26: 6; 28: 2. Ø Without wrath and doubting. All we do must be done with a sincere heart knowing that God is watching all that we do as Christian. Matthew 5: 23 -24; James 1: 6 -8. Ø Do we have the same desire as Paul? Ø Do we pray everywhere lifting holy hands?

1 Timothy 2: 9 NKJV[9] in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves

1 Timothy 2: 9 NKJV[9] in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 2: 9 “Likewise”: That is, in the same way. Paul is passing orders regarding women. Grammatically a reference to ver. 8, “I will. ” Ø He will explain what is require from them (women) regarding the “proper attired”, we cannot limit this only to public worship. that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel. Ø The term “proper” means: “Decent”. “Respectable, honorable” Ø The idea of this word includes that which is well arranged; we would say it should be in “good taste”. 1 Peter 3: 3 -5. “Modest” Pr 7: 10; Ti 2: 3 -5. • Denotes reverence, respect, and a sense of shame. “This is that modesty which is ‘fast’ or rooted in the character” • Not only must the clothing be proper, but the attitude, the manner or look of the person wearing it must be proper as well.

1 Timothy 2: 9 NKJV[9] in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves

1 Timothy 2: 9 NKJV[9] in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, With Propriety and moderation. v Denotes soundness of mind, sound judgment, habitual selfgovernment” v “Good judgment, moderation” v “The well-balanced state of mind resulting from habitual selfrestraint” v Such a well-balanced state of mind will protect a woman from vanity not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, Ø The reference is to the custom then prevalent in fashionable life, of interweaving in the hair gold, silver, pearls, causing it to flash brilliantly in the light” 1 Peter 3: 3 Ø Added to this, Roman women often had figures of harps, coronets, wreaths, emblems of temples and conquered cities woven in their hair as well.

1 Timothy 2: 10 NKJV[10] but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with

1 Timothy 2: 10 NKJV[10] but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. But: In contrast to the temptation to place all the emphasis on the outward man. “By means of good works”: “Rather than depending on what she herself simply puts on the outside, the ultimate adornment is a life of good works (loving service) which she puts on”. Examples of women who adorned themselves with such good works are found in: 1 Peter 3: 3 -4. “Every Christian woman should prize more highly a testimony to her loving deeds of service than a reputation as the bestdressed woman in the congregation”. As is proper”. This is the adornment that “fits” a woman professing to be faithful. Women professing godliness”: That is women who are claiming to be worshippers of God. “Godliness” is defined as reverence towards God. “A woman who wants to proclaim loud and clear that she is a Christian, does so by her deeds”

1 Timothy 2: 7 -10 NKJV[7] for which I was appointed a preacher and

1 Timothy 2: 7 -10 NKJV[7] for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. [8] I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; [9] in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, [10] but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 1. By whom and where was Paul appointed a preacher of the gospel. 2. What is the meaning: teacher of the “gentiles”. 3. What is the desire from Paul in verse 8? 4. What is the meaning of: “lifting holy hands”. 5. Is it wrong for sisters in Christ to use gold, silver and to fix their hair? What is the prohibition then inverse 9? 6. What should be the attire of a woman that professes godliness as per Paul in verse 10?

1 Timothy 2: 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue

1 Timothy 2: 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

What is the meaning of: Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing. What if

What is the meaning of: Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing. What if a sister cannot have babies, will she be saved?

1 Timothy 2: 11 NKJV[11] Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.

1 Timothy 2: 11 NKJV[11] Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. Let a woman Learn: • Women like men have the right to learn the word of God and then teach unto those who are lost in their sins. Acts 8: 4; 11: 19. • What Paul is going to explain is the way women must learn in the assembly. Silence: ἡσυχία he sychia; stillness, quietness, silence. • The word here does not refer to a complete absence of speaking, but to an attitude, a spirit, and a disposition. • This same word is used in 1 Timothy 2: 2 to describe a quiet and peaceful life, 2 Thess 3: 12 In all submission. • Many argue that Paul was having problems with women simple because he was “single”. 1 Cor 11: 3; Eph 5: 22 -24; Col 3: 18; 1 Pet 3: 1 • What Paul is saying is: In the assembly be submissive to men because that is God’s rule and NOT OURS!

1 Timothy 2: 12 NKJV[12] And I do not permit a woman to teach

1 Timothy 2: 12 NKJV[12] And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. Seeing that Paul spoke by inspiration (1 Cor 14: 37), this is something that God does not allow as well. 1 Cor 14: 34 -35. To teach. ü We know that woman are allow to teach other women, in fact they are commanded to do so (Titus 2: 3 -5). ü Thus the teaching role that is forbidden to women is that of assuming a position of authority as a teacher over men, such as preaching or teaching a mixed class of female and male adults. ü The verse implies that the position of a teacher of men and women is a position of authority (Titus 2: 15; 1 Timothy 4: 11; 6: 2). ü The word “teach” is a present tense, implying continual, habitual and repeated action. ü In the presence of men or answering a question in class, women often say things that provide instruction to men, what is forbidden is the role as the official teacher of the class.

1 Timothy 2: 12 NKJV[12] And I do not permit a woman to teach

1 Timothy 2: 12 NKJV[12] And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. Have authority over a man. Ø The expression means to govern another, to have authority over. Ø Thus women are prohibited from taking the lead in the public worship services, including offering public prayers, preaching, serving the Lord’s Supper, and so on. Some have tried to argue that a woman can preach as long as the men of the congregation give her permission, yet God has already overruled the men of the congregation in the above verse, “I do not permit”. Others have argued that a woman can preach as long as she does not exercise authority over the men. The problem with this view is that preaching and teaching are inherently authoritative acts (Acts 13: 1; Ephesians 4: 11). The preacher or teacher is assuming a role that has authority (Titus 2: 15).

1 Timothy 2: 13 -14 NKJV[13] For Adam was formed first, then Eve. [14]

1 Timothy 2: 13 -14 NKJV[13] For Adam was formed first, then Eve. [14] And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Paul will proceed to give two reasons for the above prohibition. Note, that the reasons for the above instruction are not silly or flimsy, and neither are they cultural. It was Adam who was first created, and then “Eve”: Ø This is exactly the same order that is found in Genesis chapter 2, which infers that Genesis 2 is a historical trustworthy account that is to be taken literally. Ø God is telling us that the order of Creation is very significant. Ø The woman was created as a help-meet (Genesis 2: 18), thus to exercise authority over a man (to act as his master) would be contrary to the order of Creation. Ø Compare with 1 Corinthians 11: 8 -9.

“And”: Here is the second reason. It was not Adam who was deceived”: v While Adam sinned (Romans 5: 12), Adam was not deceived by what the serpent said. v When Adam sinned, he did it deliberately, knowing full well what he was doing. But the woman being quite deceived”: v. That is completely and thoroughly deceived (Genesis 3: 13). v. Thus the fall was the result of Eve violating her divinely appointed role, Adam forsaking his role, and Eve assuming the role of leader and head. v. Both violated their positions, and the world has never been the same since. v“Disaster comes when that relationship is violated”

Fell into transgression”: § Even though Eve was thoroughly deceived, she is still responsible for her sin. § Being led astray by a smooth talker does not make our deviation from the truth any less sinful. § People who are deceived by false doctrine or false teachers are still in transgression. Point to Note: § God’s point here is not that men are smarter than women, for the ages are filled with men who have been deceived (2 Timothy 3: 13). § Neither is His point that men are more spiritual, for Adam disobeyed God at the same time. § Rather God’s point is to clearly point out what happens when men and women abandon their God appointed roles.

1 Timothy 2: 15 NKJV[15] Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they

1 Timothy 2: 15 NKJV[15] Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. This verse is the follow up of verse 14 where Paul says that it was the woman who fell in transgression. o Is in this verse, that Paul provides the solution for the sin of the woman in the beginning. o He says she will be saved “by childbirth”. Paul is not saying in this phrase that those who cannot have babies will not be saved! o The phrase “childbirth” from the Greek: TEKNOGONIA, means: childbirth (parentage), i. e. (by implication) maternity (the performance of maternal duties): — childbearing. o The woman will be saved by carrying the responsibility of educating and raising their children in the Lord’s way. Pro 22: 6; Deut 6: 4 -6; Eph 6: 3 -4. o If the woman keeps her duty in the way of the Lord, this will be for the benefit of the church of Christ by having men and woman faithful unto the Lord.

1 Timothy 2: 15 NKJV[15] Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they

1 Timothy 2: 15 NKJV[15] Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. The other condition for the woman to be saved is to maintain herself in: o FAITH PISTIS from the Greek. persuasion, i. e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation. o See I want you to notice, is not just the idea of having babies, having babies is irrelevant if the woman is not a woman of faith! o LOVE. From the Greek AGAPE; love, i. e. affection or benevolence; specially (plural) a love-feast: — (feast of) charity(-ably), dear, love. o Please notice again… is not just having babies what is taking women up to haven. Secondition is love from God. o HOLINESS. From the Greek HAGIASMOS; properly, purification, i. e. (the state) purity; concretely (by Hebraism) a purifier: — holiness, sanctification. o To all these, the woman is to add: Self-control.
