Single Stories slowly growing… • Each group gets a character. One who Scout sees and assumes to be a certain way, initially. Then gradually gets more information about. The trick is, as a child, Scout may or may not, transform all this into a graduated understanding of who this person really is. And why they act the way they do. That’s your job • Let’s brainstorm some of the people or groups we met in this section. We’ll describe Scout’s original “single story” impression, and then note the evidence of who this person really is. Finally, tell me about who they are really! What kind of person is this? Why do they act the way they do?

Why do you think so? • Make a chart! What are Aunt Alexandra’s values? How can you tell? What are Atticus’ values? How can you tell? • List as many other book characters as you can, and sort them into your chart! Which set of values do you think they ascribe to? • What happens in chapter 15? A mob shows up, and Atticus spends the night outside the jail, and then Jem shows up, and Scout does a pile of talking… • What effect does Scout have on the crowd? WHY? ?
