Idioms of the week • Cloud nine = to be extremely happy, to be very satisfied Example: “I just got a promotion and a new car and a new house and a free holiday in Australia! I’m on cloud nine at the moment!
#2 “Under the weather” = to be sick or un well Example: “Hey Ciaran do you want to go to the cinema tonight? ” “Not tonight mate, I’m feeling a bit under the weather, I’ve a headache and a sore throat. Thanks anyway. ”

Small Talk Polite and light conversation with a stranger or mutual friend.
Agree or Disagree? 1. It is common to discuss the weather in an elevator. 2. Talking to a stranger when you are waiting in a long line-up is normal. 3. It is appropriate to make small talk with a grocery clerk. 4. Sport is not a safe topic when speaking with a stranger. 5. Religion is a ‘safe’ topic to discuss with a new person. 6. One reason people talk to strangers is to eliminate silence. 7. Never compliment a stranger’s clothes.

Situational Small talk • 12 -13 situation cards • Each card has a different place and situation you must act out. • Keep the conversation light hearted. • Each situation will last 90 seconds. • Try to include opener, icebreaker, small talk and follow up and closing within the conversation. • After 90 seconds change station.
Situational Small talk - Examples • • You’re waiting in an elevator. You’re in a line, waiting to buy concert tickets. You are waiting at a bus stop. You are on the phone to your friend before class starts. • You are waiting at a taxi rank. • You are at a café and one person wants to sit beside the other. • You are hiking a mountain and there is a person on the same trail as you.
• You are waiting for a movie to start and you notice the person beside you is also alone. Start a conversation before the movie starts. • You are at the cash register and the shop assistant starts a conversation. • You are shopping at Kyobo Bookstore. There is a new book out and you both grab the last copy at the same time. Come to an agreement.
• It is the first day of university and you sit down beside another solo person. Start a conversation. • You are at a birthday party. You both know the birthday boy/girl but you’ve have never met each other before. Talk about how you met the birthday boy/girl. • You bumped in to an old friend from middle school. Talk about your life now.
Airplane Role play
Character examples • Look at the characters on the sheet. • Choose one or even better, make your own character! • Remember you’re stuck on this plane for the next 12 hours, make sure you get along well with your neighbour. • You can’t talk about the weather in an airplane! • 2 minutes each passenger, then change seats.
