Gk. αγάπη [aˈɣa. pi]) (Ke. αγάπη IPA: [aˈga. pɛ]), is one of several Greek words translated into English as love. The word has been used in different ways by a variety of contemporary and ancient sources, including Biblical authors. Many have thought that this word represents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, volitional, and thoughtful love. Greek philosophers at the time of Plato and other ancient authors have used forms of the word to denote love of a spouse or family, or affection for a particular activity, in contrast to philia—an affection that could denote either brotherhood or generally non-sexual affection, and eros, an affection of a sexual nature. The term 'agape' is rarely used in ancient manuscripts, but was used by the early Christians to refer to the self-sacrificing love of God for humanity, which they were committed to reciprocating and practicing towards God and among one another (also see kenosis). Philia (φιλíα) in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is usually translated as 'friendship', though in fact his use of the term is rather broader than that. Derived from the Greek word for love, "storge" is an obscure word for parental affection or the instinctive bond between animals and their young. This word came to public attention when a rumor began to circulate that the title for the sixth book in the Harry Potter series would be Harry Potter and the Pillar of Storge. J. K. Rowling, the author of the series, was quick to denounce the title as a hoax, writing on her web site "I am trying very hard not to feel offended that anyone thought this was possible. 'Storge', for crying out loud. Come on, people, get a grip. " Another rumoured title was Harry Potter and the Toenail of Icklibogg. The actual title was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
