2 Agricultural Institutions in Guyana The supportive institutions that creates development of agriculture in Guyana are as follows: (1) Development (3) Research and Extension (2) Training (4) Financial
3 Development Institutions The Ministry of agriculture has five main areas of operation. There are : - Crops e. g. National Agriculture Research Extension Institution - NAREI - Guyana Livestock Development Authority e. g. Guyana Livestock Development Authority(GLDA) - Fisheries e. g. Mahaica – Mahaicony- Agriculture Development Association (MMA/ADA) - Hydraulic section - Land surveys
4 Local training Institution 1) University of Guyana - It is located at Turkeyen and Tain offer programmes in agricultural science and forestry. - Degree programmes are offered in Agronomy, Forestry, General agricultural science and Animal science. -These are four year programs offered to persons who are suitably qualified. - Person who would have completed the Diploma in Agriculture science at the Guyana school of Agriculture are given exemption of some courses. -These programs consist of theoretical and practical work. The latter is often done in the field.
5 Local training Institution cont’d 2) Guyana school of agriculture (GSA) - It is located at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara - This institution was opened on the 9 th September, 1963 - In 1964, the institution became a corporation - The Guyana school of Agriculture offers two courses: 1)Diploma in Agricultural Science; Animal Health 2)Certificate in Agricultural science, Fisheries, Forestry, agro- processing
6 Research Institutions The National Agricultural Research Extension Institute (N. A. R. E. I) - It was establish in 1985. -The mission statement of this institute is “To advise on and develop technologies and systems for sustained agriculture development”. -The main objective of this institute is to educate the farmers on the methods of propagation and systems of eradication of pests and diseases in crops.
7 Local Financial Institution There is no specific bank that provides credit for agriculture. This task is now undertaken by commercial banks, Institute of private enterprise development( I. P. E. D. ) and small business enterprise. The banks have a special department that deals with the administration of loans to farmers. This department is referred to as the Agricultural And Industrial Credit Department.
8 The Agricultural Project unit This department provides high level support to the Ministry of Agriculture in a number of areas including policy analysis, project cycle Department, project monitoring, coordination of technical assistance and budget preparation.
