America’s Water Challenges • Tens of millions of Americans lack access to safe, affordable drinking water and sanitation. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the stark health and economic consequences of this failure. • Climate changes are already negatively affecting U. S. water resources and the consequences will worsen in coming years. • Water resource problems pose threats to U. S. national and international security. • The lack of a U. S. National Water Strategy threatens the reliability and quality of water supply and wastewater services and ultimately public health, ecosystems, and our economy. 6
Recommendations • Improve federal water programs to protect public health, especially in lowincome communities and communities of color. • Address the accelerating risks of climate change for water resources. • Assess and prepare for waterrelated national security threats. • Create a new National Water Plan. 7
Next Steps for the Pacific Institute • Prioritize research on water and equity, climate risks, and water success stories. • Conduct outreach and communications to the public and media on water challenges and solutions. • Provide briefings for legislators. • Expand partnerships with researchers, advocacy and community groups, and policymakers. 8
