Questions about Marriage 1 Corinthians 7 • Paul is addressing specific questions and/or situations. • The Corinthians wrote Paul, and seem to have a misunderstanding (see 7: 1) • Paul works through various marriage situations (see 7: 8, 10, 12, 25, 36, 39) • Everything Paul says must be read in light of Jesus’ teaching on marriage. • Read 7: 1 -24
Stop Depriving One Another 1 Corinthians 7: 1 -7 • The Corinthians (7: 1) : “It is good for a man [even married] not to touch [have sex with] a woman [his wife]. ” • Paul (7: 2 -7) : • Man and wife should “have” each other. • Sex is part of selflessly fulfilling your responsibility toward your spouse. • Only abstain temporarily by mutual consent for spiritual reasons.
Wait a minute… 1 Corinthians 7: 1 -7 How is there a problem with sexual abstinence (ch. 7) if Paul’s just addressed problems with sexual promiscuity (ch. 5 -6)? • We know the Corinthian church was divided (1: 10 -11), perhaps there were two extreme philosophies. • Perhaps the practice of extreme abstinence created the temptation toward sexual immorality.
