1 Corinthians 10: 14 -11: 1

1 Corinthians 10: 12 -13 “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,

but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. ”

1 Corinthians 10: 14 -18 “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

“In the original language, there is an article before idolatry, literally saying the idolatry. Paul is specifically referring to the idolatry at the pagan temples. ” David Guzik

“In the background of this passage are three altars of worship. The first one (10: 16 -17) is the altar where Christ offered His body as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. The second one (10: 18) is the animal altar of the OT times where Israelites offered their sacrifices in worship of God.

The third altar (10: 19 -21) is the place where Gentiles, non-Jews, offer things to demons. ” Irving Jensen

“The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. ”

v 18 “Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? ”

1 Corinthians 10: 19 -22 “What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God.

1 Corinthians 10: 19 -20 “I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. ”

v 22 “Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? ”

“By going to the verge of the allowable, they might be drawn into the sinful. ” Charles Hodge

Do All to the Glory of God 1 Corinthians 10: 23 -26 “All things are lawful, ” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful, ” but not all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. ”

“All things are lawful…” “that phrase is used in relation to Christian liberty means all things not specifically identified in Scripture as sinful. ” John Mac. Arthur

1 Corinthians 10: 25 -26 “Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof. ”

“What if one of the brothers with a weak conscience objects saying, “Wait a minute! That meat was sacrificed to an idol”? Paul responds by quoting, The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness (Psalm 24: 1).

The cow belonged to the Lord when it was on the hoof, and it belongs to the Lord now that it is on the barbecue! The food wasn’t the issue, the idol worshipping atmosphere was the issue. ” David Guzik

Acts 10: 15 “The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean. "

1 Corinthians 10: 27 -29 “If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.

But if someone says to you, ‘This has been offered in sacrifice, ’ then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— I do not mean your conscience, but his.

For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? ”

1 Corinthians 10: 31 -33 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. ”

1 Corinthians 11: 1 “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. ”
