1 ATLAS Upgrade WP 4 Face to Face meeting Liverpool 10 th November 2011 Cooling update task 2 Richard French – The University of Sheffield Ian Mercer – Lancaster, Martin Gibson, John Mattheson, Ian Wilmut RAL, Georg Viehausser- Oxford

Update • • • 2 1. 6 &1. 2 m long objects • Pressure

Update • • • 2 1. 6 &1. 2 m long objects • Pressure drop measurements (Alexander Bildatze & Richard Bates GLA/CERN) main circuit components ready to go from Ian Mercer. Order being constructed for fittings, valves etc. Cu blocks for heaters and assembly work will be done in Sheffield. Final assembly and connection to PLC and plant in Bat 158 at CERN. C 02 riug booked for Feb 2012. • Manufacture of 2 mm ID Ti completed. Lancs bending trial good but still invesitgating bending forces required, room temp makes big difference. IM invistigating, IW made hoop stess test. 2. 275 mm slot drills dispatched and ok, four remaining unused. Re-stock of cooling circuits and Stavelet circuits complete but not tested as yet. See fittings. Material reduction. • GV/RF in discussion as to what size tubes what we want (Lo. I)? I’m still unhappy that unusual or non-standard OD’s are still considered as this is a pig for testing purposes (gas connections). • Need to understand tube in close out area better – FEA needed as can’t calculate using standard formulas (+6 mm OD). Welding development • Next generation weld head when used with Swagelok system proved marginally better in terms of alignment of tube than Swagelok counterpart. Still fiddly to use but no loose pieces for similar sized head. No noticeable increase in performance, just easier to use. Will be testing on a different weld system in Jan. Testing will be done on 1/8” & 2. 275 mm Ti – long lead times as it is prototype so may not work straight out the box as there isn’t one. • • 4 H smaller weld head purchased along with 2 nd M 200 system for RAL (JM welding next to electronics). • • Trial now underway in CP 2 Ti 1/8” low stats so not worth saying anything yet. • • 2. 275 mm sleeve joint works but nasty – not refined further as flaring tooling being made to get uniform flare. Statistical trial for repeatability of welds complete in 316 L (1000 welds 98% yield). Once procedure establised 100% yeild if you knock out the set up statistics. Scratch start weld head tests, Ti procured (9 mm OD CP 2). GM run out of money so trying to see if Fronius will foot the bill as have bypassed Israeli middle men taking slice so now looking at travel & accommodation money only. Gas purge is playing up, really unsure what it is to nail fault down, flow meter changed but still issues. Working to bring gas cylinder closer to M 200 to shorten tube lenghts in supply system – changing all lines and fittings to 316 L SS to reduce moisture in lines – evident now cold nights and warm days (northerners do not need coats).

Update • • • Electrode type & profile • • Testing of 5 electrode

Update • • • Electrode type & profile • • Testing of 5 electrode types borrowed from Rolls Royce = Made zero difference. • Possibly change to manual torch on M 200 to enable clear view of what the arc profile looks like (faster results) Weld head temperature measurement still in progress. Optical sensor being investigate (stolen property so doing quietly). Fittings • Vac brazed stubs ready for manufacture (6 LV VCR to Ti interface for welding) ready to collect but having SSC fun. This time it is not SSC – it is the company unable to talk with SSC. I’m unable to place the order until I can show SSC a email chain or quote – nothing forthcoming yet. • CP 2 ti fittings still not started – material sourced from Sandvik but very pricy. Talking with HTT to try and buy small stock from them instead. • • Cost of custom fittings from Swagelok/Fti is exceptionally prohibative unless ordering 2000 plus. Re-manufacture of 6 LV VCR thin wall fittings done at Sheffield for OD’s: 1/8”, 2. 275 mm & 2. 0 mm. Welding next to electronics • • • 3 John having fun setting up the USB-PIX readout for the FEI 4 chips. Relocated the welding work away from cooling lab and now in PPD. Plans are to get this underway once the USB-PIX starts to play nicely Not sure if the old Stave made it to RAL or not for John to use as a representative structure. Cutting tooling • Ian M made powered minature chop saw, works great but dust and burr left. RF has similar bench mount version in Sheffield and same problem. • Ian M now investigating hand powered tooling (plumbers pipe cutters but smaller). The big issue is how not to deform the tube during cutting – latest is cut then face using separate tool.

Plans for AUW 4 • Comprehensive data set for 316 L orbital welding. .

Plans for AUW 4 • Comprehensive data set for 316 L orbital welding. . To finish and sign off as a viable material with joining system for ATU. (Attractive for services) • Bending on Cp 2 Ti • Chip testing with welding, ABCN-13, FE-I 4 with USBPix, (Placeholder to say still under investigation).
