1 Advanced Topside Lighting For TOC Reduction through Solid State Lighting Technologies Team: RSL Fiber Systems, LLC | HII – Newport News Shipbuilding | HII – Ingalls Shipbuilding | Austal USA | NAVSEA 05 Z 33| Signal Mate | Penn State University ARL EOC Lighting is Top 20 Maintenance Burden and Corrosion is #1 Problem OBJECTIVE: TOC REDUCTION • Increase light source life and reliability. • Reduce cost of installation. • Reduce / eliminate maintenance. • Eliminate EMI/RFI. • Reduce RCS. • Increase commonality of parts. Solution/ Approach 1. Identify and catalog issues. 2. Identify and evaluate new lighting devices and technologies – LED and Laser Diodes. 3. Define blueprint for optimal configuration. 4. Estimate costs and timelines for qualification of a complete system. Project Benefits Eliminate topside EMI/RFI. Reduce ship’s RCS. Reduce/eliminate topside maintenance. Commonality of parts – same spares across all ships’ classes. • Lights controls integrated into shipwide monitoring and control system. • Lower TOC. • • ROI in 3 years 22% TOC Savings in 5 years For Navigation & Signaling [16 lights] Higher TOC Reduction if all topside lights upgraded 2 Est. $ 3 Million/ year savings for DDG 51 (89) and FFG 62 (20) Project ROI • Corrosion and water ingress – Primary causes of failure. • Weight increases installation cost. Ø Non-electric, non-metallic, lightweight components topside. • Electrical grounding complicates installation and maintenance. Ø 30 VDC system – eliminate grounding. Ø Advanced System to use all commercially available components (TRL ≥ 9). $ 5. 5 Million+/ year savings for full U. S. Fleet Upgrade 3 Qualification Program: Ø $ 1. 1 – $ 1. 3 Million Ø 12 – 16 Months
