Domain and Range • Domain – the set of the first numbers of the ordered pairs in a relation (x values). Independent variable. Input of a function. • Range – the set of the second numbers of the ordered pairs in a relation (y-values). Dependent variable. Output of a function.

A relation is a set of ordered pairs. • A relation can be represented

A relation is a set of ordered pairs. • A relation can be represented by • a set of ordered pairs • a table • a graph • a mapping • A mapping shows how each element of the domain is paired with an element in the range.

Ex 1 Express the mapping as a set of ordered pairs. x 5 7

Ex 1 Express the mapping as a set of ordered pairs. x 5 7 4 0 y (5, 1) 1 (7, 2) 2 (4, -9) -9 (0, 2) Determine the domain and range. D: {0, 4, 5, 7} R: {-9, 1, 2}

Ex 2 Express the relation as a table, and a graph: {(2, 5), (-2,

Ex 2 Express the relation as a table, and a graph: {(2, 5), (-2, 3), (5, -2), (-1, -2)} • Determine the domain and range. D: {-2, -1, 2, 5} R: {-2, 3, 5}

Ex 3 Express the relation as a table, and a graph: {(4, 3), (-2,

Ex 3 Express the relation as a table, and a graph: {(4, 3), (-2, -1), (-3, 2), (2, -4), (0, -4)} • Determine the domain and range. D: {-3, -2, 0, 2, 4} R: {-4, -1, 2, 3}

Ex 4 Express the table as a set of ordered pairs. x -3 -1

Ex 4 Express the table as a set of ordered pairs. x -3 -1 2 5 y 6 1 0 -2 (-3, 6) (-1, 1) (2, 0) (5, -2) Determine the domain and range. D: {-3, -1, 2, 5} R: {-2, 0, 1, 6}

Ex 5 Express the graph as a set of ordered pairs. (-3, 3) (-2,

Ex 5 Express the graph as a set of ordered pairs. (-3, 3) (-2, 0) (2, 1) (3, -4) Determine the domain and range. D: {-3, -2, 2, 3} R: {-4, 0, 1, 3}
