A FRACTION is a number that represents a part of a whole. Fractions are useful whenever you need to split things up. 1 Whole Cake A cake is always cut into smaller pieces. The small pieces are a part of the whole.
Take a whole cake. . . Cut it into 4 equal pieces. Each piece is one quarter of the whole.

How many quarters make a whole? 4 Four This means: 1 4 + 1 4 = one whole 1 4 + 1 4 = 1
