This Power. Point draws on material from: Recalling the Hope of Glory (Allen Ross, 2006) In Spirit and Truth: The Mosaic Vision of Worship (Daniel I. Block, Jets, 2012) 16
Is The Past Important? Our generation isn’t the first to think about worship (Kauflin) We aren’t starting from a historical vacuum (Kauflin) Worship patterns in scripture & church history can keep us from error, from conforming to the fads & pressures of contemporary culture Are we sufficiently open to the past? 17
Lessons/Observations Learned So Far Turning Points, Crisis Worship Review Sacred Places/Memorials erected (Abraham, Jacob) Worship linked with Murder/The Flood/Rape Abel: offers sacrifice of fat of firstborn, murdered Noah: flood; altar/burnt offering of clean animals Jacob’s Sons: revenge/murder! Jacob flees to altar Circumcision on 8 th day (Abraham) Vow to worship, tithe a tenth (Jacob) 18
Let’s look at the Five OT Sacrifices 19
Let’s look at the Five OT Sacrifices Are they echoed in the NT? 20
Let’s look at the Five OT Sacrifices Are they echoed in the NT? What can they mean for us today? 21

Typical Sequence (Lev 8) 1. Purification/Sin offering: mandatory 2. Reparation offering: mandatory (or Restitution offering) 3. Burnt offering: mandatory (or Consecration offering) -----------------------4. Dedication offering: voluntary (or Gratitude offering) 5. Fellowship offering: voluntary Why this sequence? Is it logical? 23
Sacrifice is central 1. Purification/Sin Offering Mandatory The FIRST offering that the people brought For any disease, defilement issue For sins committed willfully, unknowingly Forgiveness granted when confession made Ps 32: 1 Forgiveness based on shedding of blood Serious. Blood represented a life forfeited! Billy Graham interview “Preach the blood!” Remains carried outside (sin/defilement removed) Christ crucified outside Jerusalem (Heb 13: 11 -14) 24
Sacrifice is central 1. Purification/Sin Offering male presents the lamb to priest hands on lamb (confession) Substitution of sin priest slits throat daubs blood on altar 7 times blood represents a life forfeited Costly worship foreshadows Christ’s substitutionary death 25
Sacrifice is central 1. Purification/Sin Offering male takes victim outside skins, washes, cuts it into pieces, returns priest burns fat as offering Sweet aroma to God smells & accepts it Our worship… a sweet aroma arising to God? Defilement removed Acknowledgement leads to forgiveness, removal Ritual with no confession is worthless (Allen) Acknowledgment of sin needed today? 26
Sacrifice is central 2. Reparation Offering Mandatory Defrauder must make it right! cheating, stealing, misrepresenting, etc Restitution—in full +20% fine! Moreover, express genuine repentance before sacrifice accepted Jesus: necessity of reconciliation first be reconciled, then bring gift Matt 5: 23 27
Sacrifice is central 3. Burnt Offering Mandatory offering completely burnt/consumed signifies devotion, commitment complete surrender of life renewed relationship with God NT application (Rom 12: 1) Present your bodies as a living sacrifice Practical sanctification 28
Event trumping all three sacrifices The Day of Atonement! High priest in the Holy of Holies Cloud of incense shields view of mercy seat …for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat Lev 16: 2 Aaron sacrifices for himself & the people. Then Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel…all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat… The goat shall bear all their iniquities to a barren region…shall be set free Lev 16: 21, 22 What is the significance of “both”, “all”? 29
For all three sacrifices Atonement/Forgiveness Blood of animals did not remove sin Heb 10: 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. OT sacrifice symbolized the payment for sin. A shadow that pointed to Christ. Yet cultic system actually worked (D. Block) The priest shall make atonement for the sin which has been committed, and they shall be forgiven. Lev 4: 35 This sentence is repeated 10 times! Lev 4: 20, 26, 31; 5: 10, 13, 16, 18; 6: 7; 19: 22; Ps 32: 1 30
For all three sacrifices Atonement/Forgiveness When offered in faith with integrity, Christ’s atonement was applied, forgiveness granted. Jesus: Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired but a body have you prepared for me…behold I have come to do your will, O God… [So] when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice, he sat down at the right hand of God… For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Heb 10: 5, 7, 12, 14 31
Sacrifice is central 4. Dedication Offering (Gratitude) basket of flour, olive oil, bread, fruit given to priest token of “all my substance” libation of wine poured out at foot of altar Paul I am already being poured out like a drink offering… Tim 4: 6 What is the idea behind the wine poured out? Is the wine one’s life blood being poured out? 32
Sacrifice is central 5. Fellowship Offering Celebrate being at peace with God Communal meal with priest animal without defect best cuts of meat eaten together Symbolized in the Lord’s Table? eat bread/body, drink wine/blood of Christ Peace, fellowship with God 33
Priests Ordination Ceremony (Lev 8) Blood daubed on Right ear lobe Consecration: of what you hear? Right thumb Consecration: of what you do? Right toe Consecration: of where you walk? Symbolizing a life set apart for God 34
Typical Sequence (Lev 8) 1. Purification/Sin offering: mandatory 2. Reparation offering: mandatory (or Restitution offering) 3. Burnt offering: mandatory (or Consecration offering) -----------------------4. Dedication offering: voluntary (or Gratitude offering) 5. Fellowship offering: voluntary Is sequence logical? It is applicable today? 35
Laborious? Burdensome? or, Invitational? The Sacrifices/Ceremonies Daniel Block: many of the verbs should probably be interpreted modally [“may”] rather than as imperatives [“shall”] The result: a more positive tone is pictured But you may make prilgimages (“seek the place”)…there you may bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices… may eat and…celebrate. . because YHWH your God has blessed you. Deut 12: 5 -7 Invitational focus. A privileged status. God invites his people to come before him, 36 sacrifice, eat, celebrate, as a blessed people.
Finally, if Worship is to be truly Spiritual, it must… get beyond “mere” forms, styles, to actions with depth, meaning focus our minds on the holiness, purity, glory, beauty of God emphasize the atonement rise above the earthly be inspired by a vision totally great & glorious Allen Ross 37
