Victor Hugo 1802 -1885 • The son of a general at Napoleon’s time. • He started to write the Miserables in 1845. • In 1848, Hugo gave his support to the newlyelected president Napoleon. • In 1951, Napoleon claimed to be the emperor, which upset Hugo and he turned to be against him. 3

(Line 1 -4) • Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables captures people’s imaginations. • This story of poverty, revolution and romance strikes a chord in the hearts of people everywhere. 15

(Line 6 -8) • Adapted from the 1, 200 -page novel, Les Misserables, or Les Miz as the musical version is often called, captures hearts in theater. 16

(Line 9 -12) • The story begins in 1815, when Jean Valjean just leaves prison. • Though he tries, Valjean can get no work because of his criminal past. • He finally steals some valuable silver from a kind bishop. The police catch him and return him to the bishop’s house. 19

Jean Valjean is nothing now. Another story must begin! • To Valjean’s surprise, the bishop tells the police he gave Valjean the silver as a present. (Line 12 -13) 20

At the end of the Day • As the story continues, Valjean does his best to be an honest man. ( Line 16 -17 ) 21

I didn't see you there, forgive me • He helps a group of students and the Paris poor as they fight against injustice. He saves the man his “daughter” loves. Line 19 26
