Norway Country History YEAR EVENT about AD 800 Norwegian Vikings began raiding Western Europe and the British Isles. about 875 Vikings colonized Iceland. about 900 Harold I conquered several local Vikingdoms and united Norway. He established his capital at Trondheim. about 985 Eric the Red led Viking settlers to Greenland. A few years later his son, Leif Ericson, became one of the first Europeans to explore North America. 990 s King Olaf I introduced Christianity to Norway. It soon became firmly established, and helped end the Viking period. 1349 -1350 An outbreak of plague killed about half the people of Norway, weakening the country and increasing dependence on foreign grain imports. 1380 Norway came under Danish rule. 1536 Norway became a Danish province, and Lutheranism became the official religion. 1814 Norway became a part of Sweden, but its colonies remained part of Denmark. Sweden crushed a revolt aimed at Norwegian independence. 1884 The Norwegian parliament won greater control over the ruling Cabinet. 1905 Norway became an independent nation. 1940 Germany invaded Norway during World War II and quickly controlled the country. King Håkon VII and the Cabinet fled to London, and a pro-Nazi government was installed. 1945 Håkon VII returned to Oslo in triumph. 1949 Norway became a charter member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). 1952 Oslo hosted VI Winter Olympics. 1959 Norway became a charter member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). 1970 s Norway's economy expanded greatly as a result of petroleum and natural gas production in the North Sea. 1991 King Olaf died and was succeeded by his son, Harald V. 1993 Norwegian officials led negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization that resulted in a historic peace agreement. 1994 Norway narrowly decided not to join the European Union following a referendum held in November. Lillehammer hosted XVII Winter Olympics. 1996 Thorbjørn Jugland succeeded Gro Harlem Brundtland as prime minister in October. 1997 Jugland resigned and Kjell Bondevik, leader of the Christian People's Party, was invited to form a government. 2000 Bondevik resigned after a vote of no confidence. He was replaced by Jens Stoltenberg of the Labour Party. 2001 Labour lost support at the September election and Kjell Bondevik replaced Stoltenberg as prime minister.
