NAF 053 literary author numbers NACO members suggest literary author numbers by using a fill-in form on LC’s website • Coop staff modify the suggestion as necessary, based on LC’s catalog and/or policies • NACO member adds number to NAR for author 4
NAF 053 literary author numbers NACO members suggest literary author numbers • Assignment of authors to correct time periods, languages, and geographic locations is a problem • “Verified” numbers sometimes conflict with the schedule and/or formal LCC proposals • Authors with pseudonyms are sometimes assigned multiple numbers • Over 10, 000 suppressed “holding” bib records cause confusion and filing problems in LC’s catalog • Problem increases exponentially with addition of more “holding” records 5

Coop staff do full editorial review on all suggested literary author numbers, as if they were full editorial proposals 3. Eliminate the workflow; NACO participants add unverified literary author numbers 7

NAF 053 literary author numbers When should formal proposals be made? • From CSM F 632 sec. 3. a: • Literary authors whose name changes significantly due to changes in cataloging rules, marital status, etc. • Literary authors born before 1925 • Literary authors who have pseudonyms or joint pseudonyms (regardless of date of birth) • With some exceptions • Anonymous works originally published before 1925 21
Governance similarities and differences between NACO and SACO Similarities: • Both are “authority” components of the PCC • Both require membership and training • Both incorporate names and concepts not represented in Library of Congress collections 22

Governance similarities and differences between NACO and SACO Differences: • SACO • LC has sole responsibility for the management of LCSH, LCGFT, LCMPT, LCDGT, LCC • SACO libraries propose headings, terms, and classification numbers for consideration by LC • May also suggest policy changes • Every proposal is reviewed by subject policy specialists in the Policy and Standards Division 24
